Life Threatened Gull Watching!

Shawell Tip and balancing lakes are only five minutes away from where I live, but a place I rarely visit. With an hour to spare after shopping, I decided to give it a go. The lake next to the tip and quarry on Shawell Lane looked good, but by the time I had parked and got my scope, a man in a bright orange overall had forced the gulls over towards the A5 pools. Retracing, I parked in Newton Lane, got my gear and headed to the A5 viewing area. To get to this viewing area, you take your life in your hands. There is no path, the verges are overgrown with bushes, the road is narrow and large lorries pass at speed within inches of you. It is the only birding place that I feel really unsafe and very vulnerable. Arriving at the unofficial viewing area, it looked good with masses of gulls present and I was confident that I would find something "special". Suddenly, everything took off and the view was like a snowstorm of gulls! The cause? - the man in orange had arrived to repair the pipeline on a tractor! Eventually the gulls returned where I was able to identify the usual suspects including at least two Yellow Legged Gulls, my first this year. The orange clad man reappeared and once again everything was away. I decided to give upand head back to the car for a coffee. I felt like I was trapped, being unable to safely get back onto the road as convoys of lorries hurtled by. Eventually I made it for a well deserved coffee! Should anyone wish to view this area, ensure that your life insurance is up to date! Will I be brave enough to return?

I am not impressed with the frustratingly mobile Green Winged Teal at Eyebrook Reservoir! My fourth visit and still no joy. I did, however, obtain intimate knowledge of every other Teal on the water! I think I may give up on this quest!

Eyebrook held most of the usual suspects including a good number of Pintails. First for the year included Little Egret, Red Kite and Common Snipe. A drake Smew was in front of the hide with a very flighty Redhead Smew off Stoke Dry car park.

Photographic opportunities are not good at Eyebrook but I managed a few from the hide.

Bewicks Swan - Ravensthorpe Reservoir

The private side of Ravensthorpe Reservoir is almost dry, save a small stream of water! My aim for this water was the Bewicks Swan (year tick) that had been reported for several days. The small car park near the causeway is closed for the winter, so I went around to the fishermans car park on the dam side. This enabled me to walk the perimeter which was rather muddy. Apart from the very vocal Bewicks Swan, very little else was seen.

Female Goosander

A rare day off on a sunny, cool, frosty morning had me arriving at Draycote Water before the crowds arrived, for a walk to Toft Shallows and back. Bird wise, nothing exceptional but good to see the wildfowl close in and in good numbers on the now rising water levels. It was not until I arrived in Toft that I was able to add Siskin to my year list. The waters edge was still iced over, but the motion of the water and rising temperatures provided a very unusual tinkling sound as it began to crack. Very little else to report, I offer up a few images and a day list can be found at the end of this post.

Well, snow stops play! My late shift last night should have finished at 1200, but due to the horrible snowy conditions, it did not end until 0200. With the roads still rather treacherous, I stayed at home (day off!) and in a moment of boredom, had a go at some garden birds.

My e-mails on Thursday included a request from BBC Coventry & Warwickshire Radio for an interview regarding the Waxwings at Cubbington. Happy to oblige, a slot was scheduled for 1500 today, so I headed out to Cubbington in the hope that the Waxwings would show. They had not been reported yesterday, so I was not hopeful and indeed, true to form, they failed to show! However, I think the interview went quite well. Having spent the morning walking around Draycote in the fog and seeing very little except fog, I was not in the best of moods! A Blue Whale could have been in the centre of the water but invisible! Wondering what or if I could do to update my blog, my RBA text alert informed me of six Waxwings at Cubbington. This winter, Waxwings are about as rare locally as rocking horse sh** poo, so I grabbed camera and bins and headed out at a speed that the ambulance service would have been proud of in reaching the standard for a 999 call! I arrived at the junction of Rugby Rd and Pinehurst but nothing could be seen and the light was apalling! I heard the characteristic "trilling" call and a single Waxwing land in the berry tree opposite my parking spot. This bird was then joined by a further five and all six toured the area, visiting the berry tree. In good light, the image potential would have been excellent. On this occasion, I had to use my tripod, high ISO, and battle low speed to get some record shots. THe birds remained for about 45mins before flying NE, probably to roost. I offer below some sample record shots. Keep 'em peeled they are about. I've now got four days working so extremely pleased I could touch base today.

Draycote Water

My first visit of the year to Draycote Water was pleasantly mild but rather dull and poor light. My main aim was to touch base with drake Smew which was located off Draycote Bank between the valve tower and inlet.

While watching the Smew, a Grey Wagtail flew in and "posed" on the rocks for a while, much to the annoyance of a Pied Wagtail.

While on Farborough Bank, five Golden Plovers flew over towards the A426 but did not land.

Interestingly, I spoke to a group of contractors while watching the Smew off Draycote Bank. Apparently, there have been complaints from the sailing club about the low water levels, and they have had their pleasure disrupted by running aground. The contractors have been tasked with constructing another water inlet (not sure where from) but the water level is to be raised by one meter asap! Hmmmmmmmmm!

Today was my first real days birding this year, and with a reasonable forecast, I headed up to Eyebrook Reservoir. Of course, the forecast was wrong, and I needed to dodge some fairly heavy rain showers. However, the reservoir was teaming with wildfowl, but the regular Green Winged Teal eluded me yet again.

It was good to see a large number of Pintail, and a drake Smew which took some finding. A large flock of Tree Sparrows graced the feeding area with a good number of Yellowhammer. Few waders were found with solitary Redshank and Ruff.

Best bird was undoubtedly a Peregrine, bathing off the island.

Lunch?

Having worked for most of Christmas and the New Year, I was desperate to get out for a quiet stroll. I knew Draycote and Brandon would be teaming so I settled on an outside of my normal area farmland walk. The weather was very pleasant, mild, sunny and a brisk wind. I was entertained by a Fox, intent on a good lunch and very successful (he) was too! It was also good to see three Short Eared Owls, albeit briefly, which seemed intent on teasing by short flights before hiding in the long grass.

A good start to 2012 - unfortunately I will back at work again for four long shifts this week so getting out is very unlikely!

My second day off in a row and my second soaking! Still, if you don't go out you might miss something special. Today, I just got wet! I walked to Farborough Spit but the only birds of note were the juvenile Shag on the small island and three Dunlin on the spit. Through the gloom, I only managed images of one of my favourite ducks, the Goldeneye.

A Shag at Draycote Water!

Not really as interesting as the title suggests! On my way back from Napton Reservoir, I called in at Draycote and walked to Farborough Spit. Meeting up with Bob H and Richard M, they soon had me onto a Shag, distant, and between the two islands.

These two should have gone to Specsavers - obviously not seeing the many No Dogs Allowed signs! Or maybe they thought the sign only applied to other people's dogs?

Here come the Gulls!

I was tempted to head to Eyebrook Reservoir in search of the drake Green Winged Teal, but instead, decided to stay local and visit Napton Reservoir. The day was mild, sunny and "spring like"! Napton held all the expected birds plus c7 Common Snipe. Having scanned the water, with nothing too exciting, I decided to concentrate on some of the common species. A day list can be found at the end of this post.

Eyebrook Reservoir

My target bird today was the Green Winged Teal at Eyebrook Reservoir, which unfortunately had other ideas and despite several hours searching, eluded my efforts!

The best birding experience was a Peregrine that took a fancy to a Lapwing. The Lapwing, in flight, escaped the Peregrine, but the pair gave an aerial display lasting several minutes that fighter pilots would have been proud of!

Eyebrook at the moment is a great place for waterbirds with large numbers of Pintail, the Whooper Swan, and at least eight White Fronted Geese. It was great just scanning the waterfowl, in the hope of something special!

Waders included six Ruff, five Dunlin and a Green Sandpiper.

Overhead, Buzzard, Peregrine, Kestrel, Red Kite and Raven.

It was a great day bird watching but was not a good day for photography! Unfortunately, you cannot get close to the birds, but with low water, you are even further away!

At last, a pleasant, sunny, December morning and where better to spend it than at Draycote Water.

Arriving about 0800, it was quiet with very little disturbance. The downside was that I was short of time, so I walked to Farborough Spit then back to the Inlet. Farborough was rather quiet but the west shore at the inlet held two drake and one duck Pintail, a female Red Breasted Merganser and around eight male and eleven female Goosander. The hedgerow below the Inlet held Reed Bunting, Bullfinch and best of all about fifty Yellowhammers.

I should have gone out yesterday when the Sun was shining! Instead, I chose to wait until a day that was dull, overcast, constantly threatening rain and a gale force blow! At times I could not keep the scope steady and any thoughts of photography soon disappeared! So, where was all this enjoyment? - Eyebrook Reservoir on the Leicestershire / Rutland border. My reason was to touch base with two birds that I needed on my year list - Whooper Swan and White Fronted Goose. The Whooper Swan was located just off the Stoke Dry car park. The water held large numbers of wildfowl including Wigeon, Gadwall, Shoveler, Teal, Pochard, Goldeneye and Tufted Duck. It was pleasing to see two Red Kites over the surrounding farmland, which held large numbers of Red Legged Partridge. Two Raven also passed overhead. A trip around to the bird hide provided some shelter from the strong wind and it was here that a drake Smew was located, my first this winter. Two female Common Scoter were off the island and a female Red Breasted Merganser was a pleasing find in the large duck numbers. Two Little Egrets competed for balance with the Grey Herons. The White Fronted Geese were difficult to locate! Having scanned through hundreds of Canada's and Grey Lags, as I was leaving the hide, I spotted five geese in the field opposite and quite close to the road. They were White Fronts, but by the time I got to a gap in the hedge, they had taken flight and disappeared over a ridge.

Daventry Country Park - Nothing Special!

A quick visit to Daventry Country Park this morning while Abigail had a shortened music practice. The pay & display machines are now working again with a fee of £2 per day. It was a mild and sunny morning, but the sun was in the wrong place making it difficult to scan the water. A Sparrowhawk constantly spooked the Lapwings and c300 Golden Plovers. A Green Sandpiper was on the west shore. Gulls included at least two Yellow Legged, Common, Black Headed, Lesser Black Backed, Herring and Greater Black Backed. Ducks included Wigeon, Mallard, Shoveler, Teal, Pochard, Tufted, Goldeneye and Goosander.

It seems like ages since I was out birding due to work getting in the way and rather dismal weather. Today the weather forecast predicted a cool but sunny day, so I headed over to Hanging Houghton in the hope of improving my images of the Short Eared Owls. I joined the growing hordes down the rather muddy approach road and waited for the Owls to appear. The sun shone but the wind provided a seasonally fresh feel. Did the Owls show in the sunshine -NO! They waited until the light faded before showing but numbered around eight. Rather than getting the crisp, bright images I had hoped for, I again had to make do with rather noisy ones as my auto ISO ran riot!

A Field in Northamptonshire

Short Eared Owl

Yet another very dull and misty day, just typical of November, but I decided to go and look for Short Eared Owls. A trip into Northamptonshire produced c8 Short Eared Owls with an accompaniment of Buzzard, Kestrel and Peregrine for good measure. My camera does not cope well with November's dark, dull and misty days so I am pleased with some of my images. However, a return is called for on hopefully a sunny day.

Menage a Trois at Draycote Water!

After visiting Napton Reservoir, I called in at Draycote Water in the hope of some good birds. My intention was to walk to Farborough Spit and back but as events unfolded, I ended up walking the perimeter. Three Mistle Thrushes were gracing the country park when I arrived. Walking along Farborough Bank, near the spit, I picked up a Rock Pipit and noticed the numbers of Goldeneye were increasing with at least seven males and five females. Goosander numbers have also increased with four males and seven females located off the spit and further out, a drake Shoveler was located.

It was while at the spit that a small Grebe was spotted at a distance and in the mist. The Grebe was very mobile, diving and taking to flight regularly. In the gloom, the most obvious parts were a black cap, pale face and darker neck. I could not be sure but some yellow / paleness was on the bill. The size was much larger than Dabchick but smaller than a nearby Great Crested Grebe. My first reaction was Red Necked Grebe. I phoned John Judge and Bob Hazell a a probable Red Necked Grebe but without better views, decided not to put it out on pager. The Grebe was disturbed by the fishertwats and seemed to head to the west shore area. This decided me to walk the perimeter and I met up with Pete Price, so had another set of eyes. Nothing was located in our search until we got back to Toft Shallows and I relocated the Grebe. Again it was mobile but allowed some distant views. We could not decide on Red Necked or Slavonian, but the bird again took flight towards where Bob Hazell was on Farborough Bank. A phone call failed to get him onto the Grebe and by the time we got to him, it could not be located. So please keep em peeled!

While walking the perimeter, five Lesser Redpoll were on the north shore. Toft Shallows provided one Dunlin, a Shelduck and three Pochard. On return to Farborough Bank, the female Common Scoter was located, but again was disturbed by fishertwats and the sailing club rescue boat, giving rides to sailingtwats.

It was not a day for photography, but having carried my camera all round, I felt I had to use it. What better than the amorous Alpacas at Toft. These frisky creatures enjoyed a "Menage a Trois" and I could not resist some voyeur images!

Napton Reservoir

I decided to head for Napton Reservoir at first light in the hope that something had dropped in and was staying due to the November mist. Napton is about the only local reservoir holding its normal water levels due to it being a canal feeder. However, only the usual and expected birds were to be observed and with poor light and mist, no images.

Super day, I was in utopia. Every time I turned a corner, a rarity appeared. My life list increased dramatically. A Greater Yellow Legs was identified correctly at Daventry. It was a perfect day. Then I was awakened by (a very strange man) wanting his "special" bins and scope back!

I was in two minds this morning as to whether to go out and where I should go. My choice was Draycote and when I arrived, I thought I should have stayed in bed! The light was apalling and visibility was very poor. I walked to the Farborough Spit with little motivation! On arrival I could see a wader on the shoreline that was far too dumpy to be a Dunlin. It had to be a Purple Sandpiper! An inland Purple Sandpiper is good, at Draycote it is a mega! Only my second bird - both being at Draycote. Bob Hazell soon joined me and we enjoyed the bird but were very frustrated at the poor light which required ISO 1600 on my camera! While watching the bird, I put out group texts to local birders and RBA but, unfortunately, the bird flew across to the west shore and was not relocated. While watching, a Red Brested Merganser (with a deformed bill) swam in, but soon became very mobile around the water with disturbance from the fishertwats. Farborough Bank also held six female and one male Goosander and a Rock Pipit. The Purple Sandpiper was last seen flying towards the inlet but a thorough search drew a blank. Checking the outlet produced a solitary Redshank and at least thirteen Dunlin. A good but gloomy morning!

I wonder what plans Severn Trent have regarding the very low water levels. Without significant rain / snow in the next three months, Spring looks dire.

My previous posts today have taken a different view over Draycote Water! Eventually, the fog cleared and a pleasant day ensued. However, I was rather limited as to what I could capture with the camera so was grateful for a number of obliging Bullfinches.

Draycote Water - Considerate Fishermen? (I dont think!)

I firmly believe that everyone has a right to enjoy whatever pastime they choose and without detriment to those around them. I have nothing against the fishermen pursuing their sport, the yachts, windsurfers or anyone just enjoying the vistas that Draycote Water provides. I do, however, get a little touchy when those pursuing chosen hobbies thoughtlessly impact on my enjoyment. Today, the fishermen were right pains in the arse!

This bay was full of ducks and geese before these bank fishermen sent everything flying! Prior to them moving onto the shore, I bid them a pleasant good morning. One guy said (due to the fog) you'll need night vision glasses to see the birds. I said there are two things this morning that will prevent me seeing birds one is the fog and the other is the bank / boat fishermen disturbing the birds. His reply was that bank and boat fishermen make no difference to the birds who take no notice of their presence. Needless to say, the area has NO birds!

These fishermen drove their boat to the Farborough Spit sending everything away including a bathing Lapwing that I was trying to photograph. They briefly parked before moving on but again NO birds.

It is also unacceptable to drive boats into flocks of wildfowl causing them to scatter. Toft Bay held a good number of ducks until the fishermen arrived and scattered them with most heading towards Rainbow Corner. When I got back to Rainbow Corner, boats arrived before me sending everything back towards Toft.

I decided to have a polite word with those at the fishing lodge. This was a complete waste of time. I was informed that as the fishermen pay £70 per boat, the WHOLE reservoir is sacrosanct to them! I was told that birdwatchers should confine themselves to the bird hide area in Toft. I was then informed that I could go and look at some birds (Coot!) beyond the boat moorings. They admitted they were not birdwatchers and had NO interest in birds and that they PAID to go wherever they like.

I am sure most fishermen have a genuine interest in wildlife. I bear them no malice, I just ask for them to be considerate and not spoil my enjoyment.

Draycote Water - Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness

With the fog covering all of the water, it was impossible to see any birds let alone take any pictures! Every so often, an area of brightness occured and made the title "Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness" very apt. The term "mist" is used very loosely!

Eventually, the fog turned to mist, the mist cleared and a pleasantly mild sunny day lifted the spirits.

Some of you may remember the horror film "The Fog" (1980). Draycote Water this morning resembled the set of this film where the vengeful ghosts of mariners killed in a shipwreck terrorised a small town. The fog came down followed by a sinister knock on the door. When the door was opened, the unfortunate inhabitants met a grizzly death! Some potential characters - not exactly mariners so fishermen will have to do!

A change of scenery this morning as I headed for the peace and quiet of Stanford Reservoir. Well, if you think Draycote Water is low have a look at the following images from around the site! Water is pumped from Stanford to Draycote in times of need! Drought? What drought?

Parking at the dam, I walked the south shore (Northants) as far as the inlet stream. All the expected common waterfowl were confined to the sparse areas of open water. The hedgerows held good numbers of Tree Sparrows, mixed tits & finches and Fieldfare but interestingly, no Redwings. I scanned the large expanses of mud in the hope that the Spoonbill (? Draycote bird) was still present, but I was to be disappointed. With large areas of mud, I expected some good wader numbers but apart from c200 Golden Plovers, I located two Snipe, five Dunlin and one Curlew Sandpiper. Whilst at the inlet stream end, two Ravens circled over, with Buzzard and a Kingfisher flew out of the stilling ponds.

Stanford Reservoir has an active ringing group and it was nice to meet a few and chat. Several nets were up and tapes were being played but birds seemed to be avoiding them. A good source of reference is their website:

Harrington Airfield - A little bit of history and a couple of good birds.

With the prospect of a Great Grey Shrike and Short Eared Owl, I battled with the strong wind across the derelict Harrington Airfield.

Construction of Harrington Airfield was started in 1942 and completed in 1944, requiring the movement of c210,000 cubic yards of soil, c860,000 square yards of concrete laid with one and three quarter million bricks and six miles of roadway formed. The airfield was constructed for use by B-17 Flying Fortresses but was actually used as a training base and for the "Carpet Baggers" Squadron who in 1944, supplied resistance groups in enemy occupied countries. After the war, some of the airfield was given back to farming but was rejuvenated between 1958 and 1963 as a base for Thor Rockets. The remaining derelict concret bunkers were the rocket launch pads.

However, the area can be good for some excellent birding. Today, fleeting flight views of a Great Grey Shrike was my first this year and a Short Eared Owl hunted the rough grassland around the bunkers. Golden Plover are found in the surrounding arable fields with Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel also taking advantage of the habitat. Large numbers of Yellowhammers and Skylarks over. While waiting for the VERY mobile and elusive Great Grey Shrike, opportunity was taken to photograph a Kestrel.

SPOONBILL - Draycote Water!

Well, what a surprise! Reports were coming in about a Spoonbill at Draycote Water! A mega local bird and one that is normally very difficult to see, even on the coast. I was soon on my way arriving in the carpark without full confirmation of its presence. Knowing Bob Hazell was already on site, it was while on the phone to him that a few choice words were uttered as he spotted the Spoonbill near the overflow. This was a first for me in Warwickshire, so I "ran" as fast as I could to the overflow, only being overtaken by two elderly ladies on zimmer frames en route. I managed to contact a number of local birders by mobile, giving very out of breath information, and I apologise if anyone was missed. The only downside to the morning was when two fishing boats did their best to disturb the birds without any thought for the pleasure of those on the bank enjoying the Spoonbill. Grey (Red) Phalarope - Daventry Reservoir

A Grey Phalarope was reported late yesterday afternoon at Daventry Reservoir, but with a meeting to attend, I could not get. This would be my first Grey Phalarope for three years, so I was keen to touch base with it. I arrived at Daventry Reservoir at first light and made my way onto the dam for a scan. With water levels very low, the bird was soon located off the east shore. It showed well but the light was very poor and deteriorated to drizzle!

Of course, I could not be in Daventry and not have an altercation with a dog. I was not to be disappointed as a large hound took its owner along the dam. Creeping up behind me, its "WOOF" nearly had me swimming with the Phalaraope! The owner apologised as he put the dog onto its lead, but felt the need to blame me as the dog did not recognise me as a person due to the equipment (scope & camera) I was carrying!

Black Necked Grebe

After a successful early morning visit to Daventry Reservoir for the Grey Phalarope, I decided to call in at Napton Reservoir. On my arrival, a Kingfisher sat in a bush on the small pond, but declined to stay for a photograph! The Black Necked Grebe is still present and seemed to favour the south bank until a fisherman decided to choose this bank, whereby it moved out into the central reed area. While watching the Grebe, and hoping for a wing stretch or flight (which did not happen), I was conscious of a very large passage of Ravens. These numbered twenty one from Napton Hill towards Grandborough. Four Snipe flew over but did not land and a female Merlin flew over the reedbeds. At least sixty Skylarks went over. A late Hobby was seen over canal area.

A pleasant couple of hours spent at Daventry Country Park this morning. Pleasant due to not having to pay to park (meters out of order); fewer pooches with incompetent owners (only one dog barked at me); and a reasonable list of birds. Even the vegetation had thinned out from my last visit.

The only real downside was lack of opportunity to grab any images!

Sandhill Crane - Boyton, Suffolk

Making a last minute decision, I texted Bob Hazell with a view to travelling to Boyton, Suffolk in the hope of seeing the mega Sandhill Crane (Life tick). Leaving Rugby at 0500 we arrived at Boyton at 0800, to find at least thirty cars in the car park. Making haste to the sea wall, the Sandhill Crane was located amongst the Geese at some distance from the sea wall. Viewing was good through a scope but the strong westerly blow caused a great deal of distortion and camera shake (my excuse!). The Crane seemed to be feeding well, completing a circuit of its chosen field and was stretching and calling regularly. The Carrion Crows seemed to take exception to its presence and a great deal of mobbing occured. Reasonable views were had for about two and a half hours. Suddenly the Crane took to flight. Expecting nothing more than a circuit of the field, we were surprised as it flew south and gained great height, eventually disappearing from sight. The Crane has not (yet) been re-located. So pleased we made an early start!

I have a confession to make. I rarely twitch birds at distant locations, only doing this twice - once for the Marmoras Warbler in Gwent and today for the Sandhill Crane. On both occasions, after I observed the birds, they were not seen again. Am I the grim reaper of twitching? Perhaps you should check with me to see if i'm going to the next one!

With many birders chasing rare birds around the country, I ended up at Draycote Water on a pleasant, sunny morning, but a cooling south westerly blow. The day was to prove rather exasperating with a lot of disturbance from the fishermen who seemed intent to drive their boats into any area that birds were sheltering and I was observing! One fisherman decided to park his boat virtually on the Farborough Spit - result = everything flies! Another parked just off the island - result = everything flies! Several then head into Toft - result = everything flies. At least six then head into Rainbow Corner - result = everything flies!

Marie Celeste? This boat was found at anchor, with two active rods, just off the outlet. But where was the fisherman? No sign. Had he fallen overboard? No - he was asleep on the bottom of the boat!

Now, I firmly believe that everyone should be able to enjoy their activities without prejudicing others. So, I feel violated that the fishermen have the advantage of prejudicing my enjoyment, so what can I do about it? Well, I may place an order for one of these:

Bird wise, rather quiet! Around the water were eight Dunlin, ten Ringed Plovers, and a Ruff on the island. Three Rock Pipits were at Farborough Spit and two Swallows flew along Farborough Bank. The outlet held two Shoveler, a Grey Wagtail flew along Hensborough Bank. Raptors included a Kestrel and five Buzzards.

Daventry, Borough Hill

Well, its very unseasonally warm for October and even more so when I stood in the queue at the Doctors for my Flu Jab! Once sorted, and being required to pick up Abigail in Daventry at 1230, I decided to head for Borough Hill, Daventry, on the doubtful offchance that a migrant or two might be about. It also gave me the opportunity of being harrassed by despicable owners of uncontrollable pooches, and I was not to be disappointed! The walk first of all necessitated avoidance of a multitude of varieties of dog poo (conscientious owners!), and of course to be barked at and chased, only to hear the owners praise their unleashed pooches when they had tired of me! I firmly believe that dog owners think that country parks are for their sole use, and if you don't have a dog.....................tough luck!

While walking around, I managed to locate this fungus - no idea what it is, but I liked the look of it! One suggestion was a type of breast im-plant!

Bird wise, Borough Hill has never been benevolent to me, its always a struggle, but its free to park and wander! Overhead, it was noticable that quite large numbers of Skylarks were moving through (c60) and smaller numbers of Meadow Pipits (c30). Several Green Woodpeckers called out, two Grey Herons flew over and c40 Linnets were in the rough vegetation. The woodland boundary produced three Nuthatches, two Chiffchaffs and a Coal Tit. The only other bird of note was a Wheatear that I located on a quiet bank at the end of my walk.

The Island

A morning visit to Draycote Water between 0730 & 1200 was very pleasant weather wise - indeed I soon realised I was well overdressed and the sweat poured, and poured and poured. Meeting Francoise on Hensborough Bank later in the day made me realise that her dress sense was better and more appropriate than mine. Maybe I should wear a dress?!!

Walking to Farborough Spit and back, I realised that the water levels were even lower than my last visit two weeks ago. Scanning the "millpond" water, anything on it would be clearly visible, but alas nothing outside of the expected. Scoping across to Draycote Bank got me on to three Black Terns but they soon disappeared. Overhead, visble Skylark migration was occuring with at least fifty over Farborough Bank heading east. Along the bank, four Yellow Wagtails flitted but would not come close for a picture. At the spit, a number of Dunlins and Ringed Plovers scurried about totalling around the water c15 Dunlins and c 10 Ringed Plovers. A solitary Curlew Sandpiper was on the spit with another by the outlet - same bird or two? Returning along Farborough Bank, I walked out to the valve tower in the hope of finding the Black Necked Grebe. I was to be disappointed, maybe its moved on, maybe its moved to the north shore bays, maybe I didn't look hard enough - time will tell! The outlet had further Dunlin, a drake Shoveler, and a Curlew Sandpiper (? same bird as on Farborough, ? another). A Chiffchaff sang out near the inlet. Over Draycote Bank eleven Ravens "honked" their way north.

A few windsurfers and sailing boats were venturing out, with of course the boat fishermen. Disturbance on the water was minimal until, a sailing boat moored on the island and its crew decided to walk onto the island and its full length. Of course, this scattered everything on the island which then remained barren for a good while after they had moved on.

Titchwell Marsh 25th September 2011

My week is at an end and I have to say that this is the quietest I have ever known Norfolk to be. No life ticks but several year ticks and good healthy fresh Norfolk air make it all worthwhile. I decided to call into Titchwell Marsh on my way home, arriving quite early at 0630. Unfortunately, the sun was preventing clear observation of the reserve, so I headed for the beach. Most of the birds present had already been seen throughout the week but at last, some more year ticks. From the beach, five Red Throated Divers, plus many flyby Common Scoters and a Long Tailed Duck. Walking back down the path, two Little Stint were close to the Island Hide with a small group of Dunlin. I have been trying to locate Spoonbill all week, but always seemed to be in the wrong place! When at Titchwell, it was reported at Cley, when at Cley it was reported at Titchwell! Luck was on my side when an immature Spoonbill flew onto the Thornham Marshes, distant but it was in my scope.

I apologise for the following Spoonbill record shots, next time i've booked the Hubble Space Telescope!

Another walk around Cley Marshes, again in the hope of SOMETHING unusual turning up. Have a look at the following two "sea beasts" pictures and tell me what the difference is...............?

Bird wise, not a lot of change! Marsh Harriers gave distant views, a Blackcap showed at the start of the East Bank path, a Water Rail flew up out of the reeds near Bishops Hide, Cettis Warbler and Bearded Tits were as elusive as ever. The sea held Red Throated Diver, Guillemot, Arctic Skua and Great Crested Grebe. Several Wheatear were in Eye Field.

Pink Footed Geese - Holkham

Having met Max Silverman at Cley yesterday, and neither of us having a great time finding interesting birds, we took a decision to meet at Wells Woods this morning. Arriving earlier than Max, I took a walk towards the dell. I could hear the call of a Yellow Browed Warbler in the pines but could not locate it. This would have been a life tick but as I was unable to relocate it, I will have to wait. Meeting Max in the carpark, we decided to walk back to the dell, and, NOTHING was found apart from common woodland species and I had to satisfy myself by taking images of a Robin! On return to our cars, poor Max had a sinister looking yellow sticker on his windscreen - a fine for non display of his ticket! Max's ticket had fallen off his screen and rather than suffer a £50 fine, he went in search of the attendant. Luck was on his side and the matter was sorted out. Interestingly, the car park attendent lived just down the road from me in Hillmorton for a number of years!

A quick look out to the distant sea produced a number of previously seen waders. Max decided to move on to Cley, and I headed to Lady Annes Drive at Holkham. Again very quiet with little little to see in my walk, other than the increasing numbers of Pink Footed Geese.

Now, you cannot be in the area of Wells without visiting French's fish and chip shop. It was a little early for tea, so I walked the coast path towards Stifkey (building up my appetite!). Again not a lot about with Redshank, Little Egret, Turnstone, Black Tailed Godwit, Grey Plover, Greenshank, Curlew and Whimbrel being seen, but again, not close. My fish and chips were excellent!

Black Tailed Godwits

Another walk around Cley and another day struggling to find interesting birds and also some images. The Bearded Tits again failed to pose for me so I had to concentrate on more common birds. Of note, at least five Curlew Sandpipers were around the reserve. Nice to meet Max Silverman, who was struggling as I was. Bet he got some cracking shots that he's keeping to himself!

Bar Tailed Godwit & Knot

Arriving at Titchwell, I again met Di Stone on the walk down to the beach. We decided to head to the beach and try for images of the waders near the channel. On our way, the marshes held Spotted Redshank, Black Tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Ruff and Grey Plover. On the beach, waders included Dunlin, Sanderling, Turnstone, Ringed Plover, Bar Tailed Godwit, Oystercatcher, Knot with Sandwich Terns.

Holme Dunes (NWT & NOA) 21st September 2011

Started this morning at the NOA Redwell Marsh Reserve (Holme). Opening the hide flaps, the sun was directly in my eyes, and as a result I saw nothing of note! Continuing down the long, rough track to the main NWT & NOA reserves, I parked in the NOA car park and walked up to the Observatory. Along the way, very little of note, Red Legged Partridge, Curlew, Goldcrest, Chiffchaff, Mistle Thrush and Jay. A chat with Sophie Barker (Warden, NOA) reinforced how quiet the reserves were! The sea and beach produced Gannets, Bar Tailed Godwits, Grey Plover, Ringed Plover, Knot and Arctic Skua. The dunes held Whitethroat, Meadow Pipit and Green Woodpecker. The pines had Coal Tit, Wren and Buzzard over.

Returning to the car, I came across this delightfully obliging Toad!

Black Headed Gull

I decided to take my usual walk at Cley, starting at the visitor centre and then along East Bank to the North Scrape, returning to take in the main hides, before driving down to coastguards. It was nice to have the company of Di Stone for the morning. Unfortunately, there was very little to excite me on the pools and marshes (setting the tone for the week really!).

From East Bank, Curlew, Whimbrel, Lapwing and Black Tailed Godwits prevailed in the dry fields. Bearded Tits "pinged" in the reeds and were seen in flight but the strong winds made them determined not to pose for a camera shot. Arnolds Marsh was difficult to observe being in direct sun, so a walk to the far side allowed observation of Bar Tailed Godwits, Black Tailed Godwits, Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Ruff, Avocet, Sandwich and Common Terns, with Dunlin, Oystercatcher, Green Sandpiper and Redshank. Two female Pintail also located. An obliging Little Egret was on station in the pool at the end of East Bank. The North Scrape held very little apart from Wigeon, Shelduck, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper. Offshore, hundreds of Gannets passed by, with a solitary Guillemot and Arctic Skua. The main hides produced much of the commoner waders and wildfowl with three feral Barnacle Geese in the massed groups of Canada and Grey Lags.

One highlight of the day from Daukes Hide was a Peregrine scattering most birds on the pools before catching a Dunlin in flight, before settling in full scope view on a grass area to devour it over at least an hour.

Another highlight was from the visitor centre cafe where a Turtle Dove flew past, before landing on a track opposite, before disappearing over the centre.

Walsey Hills produced a Chiffchaff!

Flitcham Abbey Farm Bird Hide 19th September 2011

The bird hide at Flitcham Abbey Farm is not a particularly well known location, but it can be worth a peaceful hour or two. Unfortunately, this afternoon was rather quiet - and set the theme for the rest of the week. Usually, the fallen oak in front of the hide, accomodates Little Owls, but today they could be heard but not seen in the woodland at the back of the hide. The water that normally fronts the hide had virtually dried up so the usual Kingfishers were off the hoped for list! Of interest were the Egyptian Geese, at least five Red Legged Partridges and four Jays. Having given up hope of seeing anything else, c15 Grey Partridges came through the wooded field boundary - the most I have seen in one place for many years.

North Norfolk 19th - 25th September 2011

The "horrendous" Parinder Hide "structure"!

Probably more suited to the set of "Guns of Navarone"!

Well, its been over twelve months since i've been over to Norfolk and a weeks break was well overdue. Leading up to my break, some very good birds were being located and observed (Little Bittern, Citrine Wagtail, Buff Breasted Sandpiper, Cattle Egret etc etc). I was very hopeful, but the strong westerly winds soon made me realise that my week would be a struggle. A struggle indeed! It was dire and even the common species had to be worked hard for. It was also very difficult to get any good images due to light conditions and distance from the lens. Best bird would have been the late discovery of an Arctic Warbler on Saturday at Burnham Overy Dunes. Unfortunately, the text alert did not come through until well after 1700, and by the time I had travelled, it would have been very poor light. With a clear night, I did not expect it to be present on Sunday morning - indeed reports were negative.

I was staying at the Crossways Camp site at Little Snoring which meant I could get to all of the north Norfolk coast within half an hour, but the text alerts were silent. How desperate was I? On two mornings at daybreak, I was wandering the campsite in my pyjamas seeking out the Tawny Owls I could hear!

Still, I managed to see 110 bird species, not bad, but I can usually see over eighty on a day trip to Titchwell!

Anyway, it was good to meet up with Di Stone and Max Silverman on a couple of occasions.

Black Necked Grebe - Napton Reservoir

Black Necked Grebe with a torticollis! Or thinking its a "wryneck"!

A visit to Napton Reservoir, late Tuesday, produced very distant views of the Black necked Grebe, a bird that I had not seen in three years. Today, a very pleasant hour was again spent at the reservoir, in the company of Dennis Woodward, watching the Grebe which was now much more obliging. Indeed, it was, at times, coming in to within 10 - 20 feet!

Also of note were Sedge Warbler, two drake Pochard and Gadwall.

My last Black Necked Grebe was in 2008 so it was on my "red list" of birds I was keen to see. A chance look on Twitter saw a tweet by Keith Yates informing that one was present at Napton Reservoir. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, I could not visit until nearly 1900 this evening, hoping that it would still be around. Meeting Keith on the bank, the bird was located in the distant reed bed and when it came into the open, chose to dive regularly! A difficult bird to observe but it is ticked!

Then, just as the light was fading, a Hobby presented itself over thew water.

Manx Shearwater

An afternoon short walk to Farborough Spit and back produced most of the birds recorded yesterday, but with perhaps better views. Medicaly, I have been advised to get outside in the fresh air and do the things that I enjoy to pave the way for my return to work.

It was good to touch base again with the Manx Shearwater that obliged by coming in quite close. Waders on Farborough Bank included a Turnstone, a Common Sandpiper, c15 Dunlin, a Ruff, two Greenshank, two Ringed Plovers, three Little Ringed Plovers, one Little Stint and one Knot. New for me today were two Little Gulls and a Curlew Sandpiper. At least three Swifts were overhead, around twelve Yellow Wagtails and two Wheatears.

The Island @ Draycote Water

Its been several weeks since i've been out birding. Unfortunately, i'm off sick from work, under treatment, and it was felt that I would benefit from a walk in the fresh air. I decided to walk to Farborough Spit and it felt really strange, and took me quite a while to get used to being out and about. Initially, I felt really tired but soon picked up in the breeze.

The water levels are still very low and the "island" is still visible. The downside is that the waders are distant.

Viewing was not easy with a brisk south westerly wind which probably accounted for the presence of a Manx Shearwater, which chose to stay distant, in the centre of the reservoir. Farborough Bank and Spit produced a good variety of waders, some of which seemed to appear out of nowhere, only seconds after the area had been searched! The bank and spit produced a single Common Sandpiper, a well hidden Turnstone, two Greenshank, a Ruff, c11 Dunlin, two Little Ringed Plovers, two Ringed Plovers, c7 Yellow Wagtails, one Wheatear, a Knot and a Little Stint (my first for Warwickshire!). Overhead amongst the numerous House Martins, Sand Martins and Swallows, were at least five Swifts.

Getting out in the fresh air and a number of quality birds definitely helped.

Land Ahoy!

An early morning visit to Draycote Water this morning with continuing low water. Indeed, one of the normally submerged islands is beginning to show.

Starting at Thurlaston, I walked to the inlet and back, eventually meeting up with a "gaggle" of birders on Farborough Bank comprising Bob D; Bob H; Richard M; Colin P; Max S and Francoise F.

The morning started well with a Kingfisher on the small pond off the approach track from Thurlaston village. An adult Yellow Legged Gull loafed in Toft shallows with a second adult near the inlet. Farborough Bank and spit held the majority of waders, notably one Dunlin keeping company with a juvenile Sanderling, three juvenile Little Ringed Plovers, and juvenile Ringed Plover. At least seven Yellow Wagtails were seen at the fishing lodge and on the sailing club roof. Rainbow Corner looked good as I approached but my impression was shatted with the arrival of Captain Pugwash and Master Mate on the "Black Pig". They were heard to say "surprised no bank anglers" in a loud voice before grounding! Surprise, surprise all the birds had gone!

One brave Greenshank remained briefly before taking flight towards Farborough Bank. The inlet Produced a juvenile Ruff, the long staying female Goosander, Yellow Legged Gull and a juvenile Shelduck which was later seen in flight over Toft. The only raptors seen by me today were over the field at the back of the inlet, namely, Buzzard, Kestrel and two Sparrowhawks. My walk back produced a Wheatear on Hensborough Bank with a second on Farborough Bank. From Farborough Spit, distant views were had of at least three Black Terns over the inlet and a Common Tern over the bank itself.

Woodchat Shrike Chipping Sodbury Common - 20th August 2011

A long staying juvenile female Woodchat Shrike has been reported at Chipping Sodbury Common for several weeks. Having dipped on the Brandon bird, I was keen to get this life tick, so on 18th August, after apalling weather all day, I found the common and set off to locate the Shrike. Directions on RBA were poor and misleading and I spent over an hour searching the wrong area. Seeing some distant birders, I headed in their direction. They had better directions as they were locals but the light was fading with more rain arriving, we were on to a loser. Another dip! As consolation, at least fifteen male & female Redstarts flitted through the hedgerows.

I had to go back! I negotiated Saturday morning to drop Heather off in Bath for retail therapy and with time out for good behaviour, I headed back to the common. Luckily, three birders had the bird in their scopes and it remained distant and mobile. It was now in my scope and my life tick was in the bag! I was soon left alone in the field that was mainly thistle and cow poo, and I watched as the Shrike navigated the distant hedgerows. Eventually it settled, and I was able to get within reasonable distance to obtain the images I offer below.

Again, supporting birds included male & female Redstarts, Whitethroat and Lesser Whitethroat. After a couple of hours, the rain returned so I headed into Bath, really chuffed!

Chew Valley Lake - 19th August 2011

The best day of the week for weather so it was back to Chew Valley Lake in the hope of some good birds and something closer to point the camera at. Well, the weather obliged, some good birds materialised, but close encounters were not to be.

Again, starting at Herriotts Bridge, it was the waders that kept us on our toes as they were very mobile! The juvenile Ruff was joined by a Greenshank and Black Tailed Godwit on the small pool. The low water on the main lake gave us Wood Sandpiper, Ringed Plovers, Little Ringed Plovers, Common Sandpipers, Green Sandpipers and Black Tailed Godwits. A Kingfisher flew briefly into the channel, which also held an adult and juvenile Water Rail. Raptor wise, a Sparrowhawk, Hobby, Buzzard and Peregrine entertained and a distant Marsh Harrier over towards the visitor centre.

Moving on to Heron's Green Bay produced a Spotted Sandpiper (good for Chew) with Green Sandpipers, Little Egrets and a Snipe on the small pool.

It was here that I was amazed to see a birder drive off, leaving his scope and tripod assembled by the roadside. Waving of arms failed to attract him, but he returned some half an hour later, hoping it was still in place. Of course it was, and it saved me going to the visitor centre to hand it in.

Needing to use the facilities, we decided to go to the visitor centre, intending to park by the toilet block but not stay thus avoiding paying the £2.50 fee. Wrong! An attendant was at the gate and insisted on relieving us of the fee which proved to be an expensive "relief" for us! Next time its the bushes!
